Ears can be pierced just about anywhere from the lower lobes to the thin rim that runs around the entire shell of the ear. Modern piercing techniques allow for easy piercing and more successful healing, especially for cartilage piercings. In order to distinguish one type of ear cartilage piercing from another, a wide array of new piercing names were born. The ear is the part of the body that is the most accepting of the "if it protrudes, pierce it" school of piercing. Many individual parts of the ear can be pierced and healed successfully. In the picture shown here, the red letters indicate the location of a wide variety of ear piercing variations.

Cheek piercing

Cheek piercing
Cheek piercing is facial body piercing through the cheek. The most common variation of the cheek piercing penetrates the facial tissue into the oral cavity. The usual placement is symmetrical on either side of the face, either penetrating or imitating dimples. The piercing can cause the wearer slight nerve damage resulting in "man-made dimples". Another way to go is getting Microdermals placed where you want the dimple to be placed. Some people prefer this method because full on cheek piercings have the tendency to leak or secrete lymph fluid. Which has a saliva like texture and can smell. Lymph fluid contains dead white blood cells that fight infection. Though microdermals do have a slightly larger chance to leave a scar than a piercing, but it will heal eventually and be almost unnoticable. The rate of infection is also lower and more comfy in the long run, also since it does not penetrate the cheek completely, there is no chance of tooth or gum damage. Microdermals are like a 'one hole' piercing, where the 'foot' of the jewelry sits below the skin and the decorative jewel or flat disc is above the skin.

Bridge piercing-nose piercing

Bridge piercing

A bridge piercing is a body piercing through the skin on the bridge of the nose, usually directly between the eyes of the wearer. The bridge piercing is also known as an "Erl" or "Earl" piercing, after its first recipient, Erl van Aken. A variation on this piercing, the vertical bridge piercing is a surface piercing, with all of the risks or potential complications related to surface piercings.

The risk of rejection is quite high for this piercing, as it is a surface piercing. There is also a high risk of scarring when the jewellery is removed

Nose piercing

Nose piercing is the piercing of the skin or cartilage which forms any part of the nose, normally for the purpose of wearing jewelry; among the different varieties of nose piercings, the nostril piercing is the most common. Nose piercing is one of the most common varieties of piercing after earlobe piercing.

Septum piercing

Christina piercing

A Christina piercing is a female genital piercing. It is located where the outer labia meet, below the pubic mound. Unless the recipient has an extremely sympathetic anatomy, Christinas are usually considered surface piercings and have a high rejection rate. Due to anatomical variation, it is not possible with every woman. The piercing does not facilitate sexual stimulation and can be found uncomfortable when pressure is applied, for example when wearing tight trousers.
Location Where labium meet below mons pubis
Jewelry Surface bar, captive bead ring, Circular barbell
Healing 3 to 4 months

The piercing usually heals in 3 to 4 months. Because it involves a surface piercing, it can lead to complications during the healing phase. Further difficulties develop due to the relatively long piercing canal and constant movement and friction. In addition to infection, the Christina piercing also is inclined to wash out. As soon as it is completely healed, the jewelry should be taken out before shaving the intimate vulva or mons pubis areas.

Monroe piercing

A Monroe piercing is a piercing placed off-centre in the upper lip, meant to resemble a beauty mark; it is also known as a 'Madonna' or 'Crawford'. The three variations of the name for the piercing bear their names from famous female icons: Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, and Cindy Crawford. The piercings bear the same name no matter which side of the lip is pierced; some sources incorrectly state that a left piercing is a Monroe and a right is a Madonna. Monroe piercing
Nicknames Madonna, Crawford
Location Off-center on upper lip
Jewelry Labret stud

This piercing is usually done with a 14g labret (chin) or 16g labret (chin), which is then shortened after healing. The labrets used often have a metal ball or a jewel. It's a piercing that has a more recent history, unlike others that were popularized in the late 70s and 80s. Seen in the mid/late 90s on the bassist of the band Coal Chamber, Rayna. Celebrities with the Monroe piercing include Travis McCoy, of Gym Class Heroes, Amy Winehouse, Ashley Massaro, Christine Dolce aka ForBiddeN, Mutya Buena of former Sugababes fame, and Trace Cyrus, of Metro Station. In the past decade, the Monroe piercing has become associated with the mainstream, due to acts such as Amy Winehouse.

Clitoris piercing

A clitoris piercing is a piercing through the clitoris itself. It is a relatively uncommon piercing and is often confused with the more common clitoral hood piercing, which pierces only the hood of the clitoris. Depending on the anatomy of the individual, they can be oriented either vertically or horizontally. This piercing, like male genital piercings which penetrate the glans penis, can be extremely sexually stimulating. This piercing requires that the piercee have a large enough clitoris to make the piercing viable.

What is Body piercing

Body piercing is the practice of puncturing any part of the body for the addition of jewelry or ornamentation. Body piercing is a practice that is governed and regulated by various state and county agencies, most frequently health departments. A body piercer must meet specific requirements and have specific training before he or she is lawfully permitted to perform body piercing on the public.

It may surprise many people to learn that before a person can offer body piercing to the public in a lawful environment, he or she is required to have health related training. A basic study of both anatomy and physiology, along with a course in preventing transmittable diseases and blood borne pathogens, is required in most locales. Other courses may be necessary to obtain a license and registration for body piercing as governed by each state or county.

Many people mistakenly believe that body piercing is unsanitary and a high health risk. It’s true that infections can occur, even in a sterile environment with a properly trained piercer, but in actuality, there are many body piercing studios that provide a more sterile service than the mall jeweler shooting a piercing gun all day. In fact, several experts recommend not piercing ears with a piercing gun, because the machine can not be properly sanitized and because it creates unnecessary blunt force to the skin and tissue, not to mention that the person wielding the gun is probably not licensed or trained in any way. A body piercing by a licensed and registered piercer will be accompanied by thorough instructions regarding caring for the fresh piercing and preventing infection during healing. All body piercing done by a licensed piercer uses sterile needles, which are disposed of after single use, and any body piercing equipment that is reusable is capable of being thoroughly sanitized.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to follow expert advice and skip the mall piercing gun when young girls want their ears pierced, because some licensed piercers will not pierce children under a certain age, sometimes as old as 16, even with parental consent. It’s also important to realize that no one under 18 should be able to receive a body piercing without parental consent. Check with licensed professionals in your area if you are interested in an ear or body piercing. A professional will offer to consult with you regarding risks and procedures to help you decide what you would like to do.
